What is a CSP?
Surrey's County Sports Partnership
Surrey's County Sports Partnership (CSP) is a network of groups and organisations from the local government, education, business, sport, health and voluntary sectors. It is recognised as the strategic representative, advocacy body and lead development agency for sport and physical activity in Surrey.
The CSP consists of a number of levels comprising:
- The Surrey Sports Board Shadow Executive which provides governance of the CSP
- The advisory Surrey Sports Board Council which includes representatives of all stakeholders/organisations involved in sport and physical activity
- Active Surrey - the core delivery team and brand.
Partners are committed to working together to jointly deliver the Surrey Sport and Physical Activity Strategy. Their collective vision is for Surrey to become a more active & successful sporting county.
Surrey Sports Board Shadow Executive
As part of the CSP's regular governance review cycle, a small Review Group of key stakeholders was set up in 2012 to review the CSP. Their interim report suggested three main recommendations, listed in this executive summary.
One of the recommendations to improve governance group was to change the CSP Review Group to become the Surrey Sports Board Shadow Executive in October 2012. They will conclude the CSP Review in 2013 and will also work on improving and developing the CSP's governance, accountability and influence along with host agency, Surrey County Council.

Surrey Sports Board Council
The Surrey Sports Board Council is a stakeholder representative group/forum, set up to shape and influence the strategic direction of sport and physical activity in the county of Surrey. The Board aims to be the voice of sport and physical activity for Surrey on local, regional and national consultative matters.
There are over 20 members who have been either nominated or elected as representatives of their organisations or networks. Their role is to represent the views and interests of their group (rather than their individual organisation) and feedback information and actions through their networks. The Board meets quarterly and is facilitated by the CSP Core Team, Active Surrey.
The primary purpose of the SSB Council has been to develop (through stakeholder consultation) the Surrey Sport and Physical Activity Strategy 2011-15, a framework to bring partners together to deliver improvements (see below).

Surrey Sport & Physical Activity Strategy
The Surrey CSP looks to work on areas that are either not being dealt with or could be completed better or more quickly by working with others in partnership. Following 12 months of consultation, the Surrey Sport & Physical Activity Strategy 2011-15 was launched at the Surrey Sports Conference 2011. The strategy aims to achieve the following outcomes:
Participation: Everyone has the opportunity to be active for life
People: Strong, sustainable infrastructure is available in every community
Places: Sufficient, well-managed facilities meet Surrey’s needs
Performers: Talented performers are supported
Delivery of the strategy is through four Thematic Working Groups (TWG), made up of Surrey Sports Board Council member organisations and other interested individuals.
Further information on the TWGs will be available soon but in the meantime, interested parties can contact the relevant lead officer from Active Surrey:
